Return of the Ancients is the sort of Early Access patch that makes players stop and recheck their plans. It's not just another balance pass. With the 0.5 update, Path of Exile 2 is adding grenade launcher crossbows, the Kalguuran Runes of Aldur system, and a fresh wave of build-defining uniques. If you're already sorting stash tabs and comparing POE 2 Items for your next character, Nightfall and Redemption are the two names worth watching first, because both change how you actually play rather than simply raising your damage sheet.
Nightfall is tied to Breachlord Tul, and it turns a shield into something far stranger than a defensive slot. Its special skill, Soaring Midnight, lets you throw the shield out, then cast again to blink to it and slam the area. If you don't reactivate it, the shield comes back on its own. That sounds simple, but the trick is in the reset. Catching the returning shield or breaking Frost Wall crystals can refresh the slam, so a good player can chain movement and damage in a way that feels closer to a combat dance than a normal shield build.
The Frost Wall setup is the obvious starting point. You place the wall, send Nightfall through it, shatter the crystals, and use the reset to slam again. It's a little fiddly at first, but you'll quickly see why people are excited. Projectile speed matters more than usual here, since it affects how far and how smoothly the shield travels. Damage scaling is also unusual. Soaring Midnight can benefit from projectile, melee, and area tools, which gives theorycrafters plenty to test. The downside? You'll need strength, timing, and probably a healthy budget once the item starts appearing from Tul farming.
Redemption pushes the new grenade launcher archetype in a much louder direction. Instead of mixing regular crossbow skills with a few explosives, it wants you to commit to grenades. Its key mechanic, Explosive Fervour, builds after repeated grenade skill use. Once it turns on, cooldowns drop away and attack speed jumps, giving you a short window where the screen fills with blasts. That loop feels made for Mercenary players who enjoy planning a burst phase, then dumping everything at once. It should be nasty against bosses, especially during fights with add waves or forced downtime.
Neither item looks like a free win. Nightfall asks for clean cooldown handling, and bad positioning could get you killed even with a shield equipped. Redemption has a different problem: mana. Spamming grenade skills during Explosive Fervour will almost certainly drain resources fast, so leech, reduced cost, flask planning, and passive tree investment won't be optional. Rare grenade launchers also shouldn't be ignored. With dedicated explosive modifiers entering the pool, crafted weapons may become strong budget choices or even specialised endgame tools for players who don't want to chase a unique right away.
For Nightfall, Breach is the likely home. Focus on dense maps, Breach passives, Tul splinters, and repeated Tul encounters once your character can handle them. Redemption's source is less certain, though Trarthan-related content, high-tier mapping, and pinnacle bosses all look like sensible targets. The smart move is to build a character that farms quickly but can still handle bosses without falling apart. As the patch economy settles, some players will trade early to test these setups faster, and those looking to buy cheap POE 2 Items should still keep an eye on mana gear, cooldown tools, and explosive modifiers before rushing into the hype.
