Given the rapid recent advances in genomics, agriculture, transgenic biology, stem cell research and other related areas of biotechnology and a prediction that these fields will continue to mature and become increasingly more sophisticated, there is an growing need to create an informed and educated student in this area. We believe that a working knowledge of DNA, genetics, and biotechnology has become as fundamental to a basic education as an understanding of the solar system. In addition, biotechnology fields offer students career opportunities which is best recognized early in their academics so that they can make the appropriate choices to be best prepared. The rise of recent controversy and misconceptions about many areas of biotechnology including GMOs in food, vaccines and vaccination, personalized medicine, stem cell research and many other topics creates a growing educational challenge. The introduction of a general education course which concentrates on evidence based knowledge on biotechnology and is developed for a general audience with a large potential enrollment is designed to meet that challenge. In turn our experience shows that such a course serves to recruit new scientists and other participants into the careers in the emerging new fields of biotechnology and stimulates further interest in STEM related disciplines. The courses in this series have been established in the curriculum over the past several years with high student demand and interest. Given the scope and impact of biology and biotechnology currently and into the future, there are few general courses that are more socially relevant. "Scientific issues permeate the law. I believe [that] in this age of science we must build legal foundations that are sound in science as well as in law. The result, in my view will further not only the interests of truth but also of justice." (US Supreme Court Justice Breyer, 1998). The introductory biotechnology course presents the basis for biological life, and describe the tools for the way we work with life in the fields of biotechnology. First, in Part I of Issues in Biotechnology, the basic questions What is Life? and How does it work? are examined. How do we go from DNA to an organism that can discuss it?; let alone engineer it. To address these questions, the fundamental mechanics of biological life, DNA, gene expression and cloning are presented in basic terms as a basis for the current applications of modern biotechnology. Evolution is described for how it happens at a molecular level. Next, in Part II the current basic techniques used for gene cloning, DNA sequencing, PCR and gene transfer are examined. These technologies provide the basis for biotechnological advances in agricultural, medical, pharmaceutical, agricultural, environmental, and forensic applications. Applications of recombinant DNA and genetic engineering are explored in these areas that are dramatically affecting our society and future. Lastly, the implications of biotechnology to world economy, politics, careers, ecology social concerns and ethics are also discussed. This lecture provides an Overview of the Course. The first lecture gives an overview of the Course as it is presented in two major Sections. In Section I. The basic questions: What is Life? and, How Does it Work? Are addressed. From DNA to Life, The Mechanics of Life and General Biotechnology provide a foundation for the next question; -How Do We Work With Life? Including; Gene Cloning, PCR and DNA Sequencing. In Section II. The Applications of Biotechnology looks at The Way We Work With Life; Incorporated throughout the course are the Ethics and Social Concerns which surround these important and socially relevant applications and ideas. Discovery Channel invited DBLG to refresh it's channel Animal Planet. Coinciding with the launch of the HD simulcast for Animal Planet, the refresh of the on-air look is intended to give the brand a more confident and distinctive tone of voice, resonating with its audience, and linking the brand with it's content. To do this we developed four unique worlds in which the inhabitants could interacting with their surroundings. Once the four environments were designed, we worked closely with Blue Zoo who modelled and animated the creatures. For the look and feel we were inspired by hand made art such as origami and paper craft. This warm and captivating style certainly appeals to the target audience. These images of our Sacred Earth set to music are my way of sharing some of the magic I've experienced along the way... "Terra Sacra" ~ Latin for Sacred Earth. Terra Sacra Time Lapses is a short film featuring remote landscapes and ancient monuments from around the globe. These images were photographed during my assignments and personal travels between 2006-2012. I've combined my favourite shots from these trips into non-narrative film that touches on a theme close to my heart: Sacred Earth. The visuals are driven by an original score by composer Roy Milner (roymilner.com). The six-minute film is a journey through three distinct Acts: (I) Primordial Earth (II) Past meets Present and (III) Eternal Universe. This film is a personal project to share the beauty and awe I witnessed at these locations. I hope viewers will be moved by the intangible power of our Terra Sacra. TECHNICAL: Most of the time lapses were shot with a Canon 5D at the maximum resolution using a TC-80N3 intervalometer. A few shots were taken with a Canon 7D and Canon 5D mk II. All images are single manual exposures, no HDR composites. Original full resolution images were colour corrected and processed in 16-bit in Adobe Bridge using Camera Raw and exported as JPEG sequences at maximum quality. The rendered JPEG sets were then opened in Quicktime Pro as image sequences and exported at their native full resolution (up to 5K) as Quicktime movies at 23.98 fps with the Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) codec. The ProRes 422 (HQ) files were then edited in Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 on a ProRes 422 (HQ) timeline at 23.98. The master file is ProRes 422 (HQ) 1920 x 1080. Selected time lapse sequences were also processed using Adobe Bridge and LRTimelapse to smoothen aperture flicker apparent in some shots with large depth-of-field. After winning the pitch we dived in this exciting project that was the Discovery Latam Refreshes image. Under the concept "Get your hands dirty" we developed the new images of a channel that was looking for a Human and Real approach that express "the Discovery experience". We showed to the audience how difficult it is to cross the deep forest, build a car from scratch or deceive thousands of people with a magic trick. That's how we reached these mixed techniques result, where we use live action, special effects, 2D design, 3D production and VFX dancing together to create this strong image where the typography is also protagonist. It was a hard work in conjunction with the Discovery team to whom we owe deep appreciation for trusting Plenty. We also couple that with the leak that says the Xperia Z4 Ultra will have front stereo speakers. I wonder where they will actually fit, since we almost have no bezel at the top or bottom… Anyway, we were also lucky enough to get some specs of the Ultra as well. The device will supposedly feature a 5.95 inch display with 2880 x 1440 pixel resolution and 18:9 aspect. The Xperia Z4 meanwhile is somehow shorter than the Xperia Z3 and its edges are more realistic. Back to the Z4 Ultra, it’s also said to come with a 20.7 MP Exmor RS camera, with 25600 ISO, 25 mm G Lens and RAW capture. The phone measures 8.51 mm in thickness and has S Force front surround sound, a feature that was also present on the Xperia Z3.

Envision a solution where the partition between the digital and physical landscapes no longer exists. To solve this we sought to create a fully integrated, 'seamless' retail environment. Seeking digital excellence in both customer frontend and technical backend. In part the solution was to create new interactions; expanding on product details, assortment, and real-time availability; while pairing brand owned social media streams and user generated content. The other part was to deliver these experiences through leading edge technology. To better connect consumer and product we sought to create an adaptive environment which engages the consumer respective to their journey. Three custom built multi-user, multi-touch terminals expanded the brand experience with product information and online purchasing options. Focus groups and user analysis further validated our concept while strengthening insight into today's consumer expectations.

The channel should be a physical and emotional journey. We have always been thrilled about merging type with imagery, so we wrote down our feelings as we watched the programming, and made those words of excitement into bold type-portals between shots. To enhance the feeling of a journey, we created circular transitional devices using layers of the immersive footage to transport us to different places. As for colors, we picked up nuances from natural phenomena and light. Add world class dramatic music by Michael Montes and you're done!

We enjoyed a lot this 3d beautiful close-ups and the finest animation and composition for this project. We had to find ideas to form the Discovery logo sphear in 15 secs and tell a show the concepts of Technology & Optical Illusions (Director's Cut). In Technology ID the wires are plugged and powerful techno-mechanisms and 1.000 Watts of light power turns on this technologic sphere ball machine! In Optical Illusions (Director's Cut) the main concept was to play with glass and infinite clones of lenses that forms a tunnel to go in and out at the same time. Finally we end in a nodal geosphere that conforms the logo.
