Expedition has become one of the most interesting low-investment farming strategies in Path of Exile 2, especially for players looking for consistent ways to build up POE2 Currency. The strategy does not require an enormous amount of preparation because the basic investment is mainly your map and a Logbook. With a powerful enough character and a good understanding of Expedition mechanics, the potential returns can be extremely high. In one extended farming session described by the creator, roughly eight to nine hours of Expedition farming increased the player's Divine total from 325 to 562, which worked out to more than 25 raw Divines per hour before counting other valuable drops. While these numbers are personal results rather than guaranteed returns, they demonstrate why Expedition has attracted so much attention.
One of the biggest advantages of Expedition is its relatively low entry cost. Unlike some farming strategies that require expensive scarabs, specialized maps, or complicated setups, Expedition can be started with fairly simple resources. The main challenge is not the investment but understanding how to maximize the modifiers on each Grand Expedition. Since the removal of Olroth's Saga from regular event league spawning, the strategy has changed. Olroth's Saga can now appear randomly on Grand Expedition maps, reducing some of the extreme profit potential seen in previous setups. Even so, Expedition remains capable of producing impressive amounts of loot.
For tablets, the recommended setup focuses on three Eradicated Tablets. According to the strategy, Excision Tablets currently do not work for Grand Expeditions, so they should not be part of this setup. Three tablets can provide additional random map modifiers, and players should prioritize modifiers that increase monster effect or the number of rare monsters. Item rarity can also be useful, although it is generally considered less attractive than the other options. More expensive tablets are best saved for especially valuable five-, six-, or seven-mod Expedition maps. For players with weaker characters, cheaper two-mod tablets can make the content easier while still providing worthwhile rewards.
Waystones are another important part of the setup. Monster effect should generally be prioritized because it can significantly improve the value of Expedition encounters. Monster rarity and item rarity are also useful secondary options. The farming approach described in the source avoids prioritizing pack size on ordinary maps and instead focuses on corrupting maps after preparing a large inventory of Waystones. An eight-mod map with a favorable pack-size modifier can be worth keeping, while less impressive rolls can simply be used for regular farming.
Atlas choices also have a major impact on the experience. Monster effect is the standard option for players whose builds can handle the increased difficulty. Rarity can be selected instead when survivability or clear speed becomes an issue. For Expedition terrain, Desert is suggested for stronger rewards, while Forest provides a more manageable alternative for players who are still learning the strategy. Expedition-specific passives that improve remnants, explosives, monster life, and quantity can further increase the potential value of each encounter.
The real key to Expedition profit, however, is learning how to build powerful rune chains. Early in a Grand Expedition, players should focus on collecting useful purple runes rather than immediately chasing the highest number. The goal is to carry strong modifiers forward through the Expedition and eventually combine them with seven-, eight-, or nine-rune encounters. A highlighted rune can propagate its effect to subsequent groups, allowing an excellent early modifier to influence multiple later encounters. This mechanic is one of the most important concepts to understand if you want to maximize the number of monsters and the amount of loot generated.
Opulent is especially valuable because it can dramatically improve the value of other runes. When possible, players should consider moving toward an Opulent rune instead of taking a weaker route. Other useful runes mentioned in the strategy include Power, Death, Bond, Oath, Time, and Rebirth. The exact choices will depend on the map layout and the modifiers available, so Expedition requires some adaptation rather than blindly following the same route every time.
Rerolling is also an essential part of the process. Liquid Verisium can be used to reroll runes, and the farming method described in the source reportedly generates enough of the resource to sustain regular use. Early in an Expedition, weak four- or five-rune options without useful purple modifiers can usually be rerolled. However, guaranteed rewards such as Divines or other items worth roughly a Divine or more may justify keeping an otherwise mediocre option. Near the end of an Expedition, seven-plus rune combinations become much more valuable and should generally be prioritized.
Finally, remember that Expedition is highly variable. Map layouts, rune locations, explosive availability, and random rewards can all change from one run to another. The source describes an average of roughly eight to ten raw Divines per Expedition over the long term, while some runs produced more than 20 and others only three or four. Strong characters are also important because Grand Expeditions can be extremely dangerous, particularly when many rare monsters are stacked with powerful modifiers. Players should therefore focus on keeping their maps alive rather than taking unnecessary risks. With enough practice, careful rune selection, and sensible investment, Expedition can become a highly productive farming method. If your character can handle the difficulty and you want to expand your resources efficiently, learning this strategy can be a useful alternative to simply choosing to poe 2 trade.
