A homework answer becomes much more convincing when the reader can see where your information came from and, more importantly, why that information supports your conclusion.
That does not mean filling every paragraph with citations. Good academic writing is not a reference-list competition. The real skill is choosing appropriate evidence, understanding what a source actually says, and connecting that evidence to your own reasoning.
I recommend treating academic sources as building blocks for an argument. You provide the explanation; research gives you evidence to test, support, qualify, or challenge what you are saying.
University assignments usually expect more than personal opinion. Even when a question asks what you think, your position is generally stronger when you can show that you have considered established research and evidence.
Consider two versions of the same argument:
Artificial intelligence is improving fintech because it can process more information than traditional financial systems.
The statement may sound reasonable, but it is broad and unsupported.
A better version would identify a specific research finding and then explain its relevance. For example, research published by the Bank for International Settlements examined transaction-level data from a Chinese fintech company and found that a machine-learning model using non-traditional data was better at predicting losses and defaults than traditional models during a negative credit-supply shock. The researchers also found that this advantage became smaller for borrowers with longer credit histories. (Bank for International Settlements)
That second approach is more persuasive because it does three things:
Makes a narrower claim.
Supports it with identifiable research.
Acknowledges a limitation instead of turning one study into a universal conclusion.
This is what academic evidence should do in an assignment.
One of the most useful research habits is to avoid searching for your entire homework question as one giant phrase.
Instead, break it into smaller questions.
Imagine your assignment asks:
How does fintech affect access to business credit?
Before searching, I would turn that into several research questions:
What is fintech credit?
Why might fintech lenders reach borrowers traditional lenders miss?
What evidence exists about fintech lending and credit access?
What role do alternative data and machine learning play?
Are there disadvantages or risks?
Do recent studies challenge the idea that fintech automatically improves inclusion?
Now your research has direction.
This also prevents a common problem: collecting ten articles that all repeat the same general statement without actually answering the assignment.
You can make a simple working table before writing:

You don't necessarily need a separate source for every row. The purpose is to see what evidence your argument actually requires.
Start with your university library whenever possible. Library databases are particularly useful because they give you access to scholarly journals, books, conference papers, and specialist collections.
For broad discovery, Google Scholar is another practical starting point. Google says Scholar searches across articles, theses, books, abstracts, court opinions, repositories, universities, professional societies, and academic publishers. But there is an important distinction:
Google Scholar helps you find literature; it does not automatically make every result a good source.
You still have to evaluate what you find.
For example, a search might produce:
A peer-reviewed journal article
A university working paper
A government report
A company white paper
A student's dissertation
A news article
A blog post
Those sources can have very different levels of authority for a particular claim.
Another useful resource is Crossref, which provides scholarly metadata such as publication titles, authors, dates, references, and DOI information. Its database covers more than 185 million research-object records. (www.crossref.org)
I particularly like DOI information when checking whether I have the correct version of an academic paper. It gives you another way to verify the publication rather than relying solely on a search-result title.
Finding a source is only half the job.
Before citing it, ask yourself five questions:
A source can be academically respectable and still be wrong for your particular argument.
If your paragraph discusses the effect of machine learning on credit-risk prediction, a paper about the history of digital banking may provide useful background but may not support your central claim.
Look at the authors and their institutional affiliations.
Research written by recognized specialists, academic researchers, central banks, government agencies, or established research institutions can carry substantial authority but authority should still be judged in relation to the specific question.
Read beyond the abstract when the source is important to your argument.
Find out:
What data did the researchers use?
How large was the sample?
What period did they study?
What methods did they use?
Were there limitations?
Does the conclusion actually match your interpretation?

The right publication date depends on the subject.
A classic economics paper may remain essential decades after publication. A paper about artificial intelligence regulation, digital payments, or rapidly evolving fintech practices may need more recent evidence.
For example, a 2025 BIS Bulletin examining digital innovation and small-business credit in emerging markets concluded that fintech and big-tech lenders may improve access, particularly where businesses have limited financial histories or collateral, but also noted that technology alone cannot eliminate deeper obstacles to SME lending. That qualification matters.
Ask whether the source is informing, researching, selling, advocating, or promoting something.
A company's website can be useful for describing its own product. It is much less persuasive as independent evidence that the product is superior to competitors.
This is one of the most important rules when writing with research.
Suppose a study examines two fintech lenders in the United States. You cannot automatically turn its results into:
Fintech lenders always provide better access to credit.
The study may provide evidence for a much narrower statement.
A 2022 BIS working paper analyzed proprietary data from Funding Circle and LendingClub covering U.S. small-business lending from 2016 to 2019. The researchers found that these fintech platforms lent more in ZIP codes with higher unemployment and business bankruptcy filings, and that their internal credit scores predicted future delinquencies more accurately than traditional FICO or VantageScore measures in the studied data. That's useful evidence.
But the careful writer asks what the study does not establish.
It does not prove that every fintech lender produces the same results in every country, for every borrower, or under every economic condition.
Adding that limitation can actually make your homework stronger because it demonstrates critical analysis rather than simple source repetition.
A reliable paragraph structure is:
Claim → Evidence → Explanation
Start with your point.
Then introduce the relevant research.
Finally, explain how that research affects your argument.
For example:
Fintech lending may improve access to credit for some small businesses that traditional lenders find difficult to assess. Research using data from two U.S. fintech lenders found that their lending was relatively more concentrated in areas with higher unemployment and business bankruptcy rates, while their internal credit scores showed stronger predictive performance than traditional credit scores in the researchers' sample. This suggests that alternative data can help lenders evaluate borrowers who may not fit conventional lending models, although the finding should be interpreted within the study's specific market and dataset. (Bank for International Settlements)
Notice that the research is not doing all the work.
The source provides evidence. Your explanation tells the reader why that evidence matters.
That distinction is crucial.
Paraphrasing does not mean replacing five words in a sentence and leaving everything else unchanged.
If you copy a source's structure and simply swap words for synonyms, you can still end up with writing that is too close to the original.
A better process is:
Read the source until you understand the idea.
Identify the specific point you need.
Put the source aside.
Explain that point naturally in your own words.
Compare your version with the original.
Add a citation.
You should also avoid changing a source's conclusion while paraphrasing it.
If researchers say that a model may improve prediction under particular circumstances, don't turn that into “research proves the model is better.”
Your wording should preserve the original level of certainty.
Quotes are useful when the exact wording matters.
They can work well for:
Formal definitions
Particularly precise statements
Important theoretical positions
Language you intend to analyze
But most homework answers do not need a quotation every few sentences.
If you can explain the idea accurately in your own words, paraphrasing will often produce a smoother and more analytical paragraph.
Strong research is rarely built from one type of publication.
You might use a journal article for empirical findings, an institutional report for current market information, and a government source for official statistics.
The important thing is that each source has a job.
For example, when researching fintech credit, the BIS provides several useful forms of evidence. Its research has examined fintech credit markets, machine-learning credit scoring, small-business lending, and the relationship between digital innovation and financial inclusion. Recent research can also complicate an overly positive argument. A 2026 Journal of Financial Stability study examined whether fintech lenders provide business loans to underserved groups and found differences in lending outcomes across demographic groups rather than a simple, universal inclusion effect. That kind of evidence gives you something to analyze.
Instead of writing:
Fintech is good for everyone.
You can ask:
Under what conditions does fintech improve access, and which borrowers may benefit less?
That's a much better academic question.
A long reference list can look impressive while hiding weak reasoning.
I would rather see six highly relevant sources used intelligently than fifteen vaguely related articles attached to paragraphs without explanation.
Try this workflow:
Identify exactly what the question is asking you to explain, compare, evaluate, or argue.
Write three to five points you expect your answer to establish.
Search specifically for evidence rather than collecting articles randomly.
Check the author, publication, date, DOI where applicable, methodology, and actual findings.
Record the source's main finding separately from your interpretation of it.
Write your explanation first, then integrate the evidence where it genuinely supports your point.
Make sure every borrowed idea, statistic, finding, quotation, or non-common-knowledge claim has the required attribution.
Make sure the sources you cite in the text appear in your reference list and vice versa.
Some assignments are difficult because the research itself is difficult.
Fintech is a good example. A question can combine finance, economics, statistics, computer science, regulation, and business strategy in a single assignment.
In that situation, the challenge isn't simply finding an article. You need to understand enough of the research to explain it correctly.

Including that kind of tension makes an answer more credible because real academic research rarely reduces a complicated issue to “good” or “bad.”
The best way to support a homework answer with academic sources is not to attach a citation to every sentence and hope the assignment looks scholarly.
Instead, build a clear chain:
Question → claim → evidence → interpretation → conclusion.
Use Google Scholar and your library to discover relevant literature. Verify important publications and their metadata. Evaluate sources for relevance, authority, accuracy, currency, and purpose. Then explain the evidence in your own words and make clear how it supports or complicates your argument. (Google Scholar)
When you work this way, citations stop being something you add because an assignment requires them. They become part of the reasoning itself.
And that's ultimately what a well-supported homework answer should demonstrate: not that you found a lot of information, but that you know which evidence matters, how reliable it is, and what you can legitimately conclude from it.
